Isabel Flick: The Many Lives of an Extraordinary Aboriginal Woman

Product Description Product DescriptionThe remarkable life of Isabel Flick, a leading Aboriginal community activist, is portrayed in this work. Her story, as told to one of Australia's leading experts on Aboriginal history, paints a picture of the experience of Aboriginal people in Australia during the 20th century and of race relations in its rural towns. Flick's life, from her childhood in a small town in New South Wales to her work fighting for reform in education and healthcare, is explored in inspirational detail. Her accomplishments, including the laying of groundwork for the unrest preceding Australia's Freedom Ride in 1965 and her work with the union movement are detailed, culminating in her 1991 nomination as town spokesperson for a small town in New South Wales with a long history of racism. Flick's is a story of determination and success in the face of cultural barriers.

The Correspondence of Thomas Reid

Product Description Product DescriptionThomas Reid is now recognized as one of the towering figures of the Enlightenment. Best known for his published writings on epistemology and moral theory, he was also an accomplished mathematician and natural philosopher, as an earlier volume of his manuscripts edited by Paul Wood for the Edinburgh Reid Edition, Thomas Reid on the Animate Creation, has shown. The Correspondence of Thomas Reid collects all of the known letters to and from Reid in a fully annotated form. Letters already published by Sir William Hamilton and others have been reedited, and roughly half of the letters included appear in print for the first time. Writing in 1802, Reid's disciple and biographer Dugald Stewart doubted that Reid's correspondence "would be generally interesting." This collection proves otherwise, for the letters illuminate virtually every aspect of Reid's life and career and, in some instances, provide us with invaluable evidence about activities otherwise undocumented in his manuscripts or published works. Through his correspondence we can trace Reid's relations with contemporaries such as David Hume and his colleagues at both King's College, Aberdeen, and the University of Glasgow, as well as his engagement with the most controversial philosophical, scientific, and political issues of his day. If anything, the letters assembled here serve as the starting point for understanding Reid and his place in the Enlightenment.

The Lesser Evil: The Diaries of Victor Klemperer 1945-59

Product Description Product DescriptionThis final volume of Victor Klemperer’s diaries opens in 1945. After the horrors of the war, Victor and Eva’s return to their Dresden home seems like a fairytale. Victor tries to resume his distinguished academic career and joins East Germany’s Communist Party. In 1951, Eva dies; a year later, aged 70, Victor marries a student—an unlikely but successful love match. But with the growing repression of the Communist Party, and the memory of those who did not survive, Victor’s achievements ring hollow. Politics, he comes to believe, is, above all, the choice of “the lesser evil.” A masterpiece both of Holocaust literature and memoir.
